| Air services agreement | A treaty between governments governing commercial air services between them |
| BACN | Battlefield Airborne Communications Node, a high-altitude communications relay system |
| Beyond rights | Rights to continue a flight from a foreign country to a third country (fifth freedom) |
| Cabotage | Carrying passengers or cargo between two points within one country |
| Chicago Convention | The 1944 Convention on International Civil Aviation |
| Codeshare | An arrangement in which one airline sells seats on another airline's flight under its own flight number |
| Designation | A government's nomination of an airline to operate under an air services agreement |
| Freedoms of the air | Traffic rights granted between states, numbered first through ninth |
| IATA | International Air Transport Association, a trade association of airlines |
| ICAO | International Civil Aviation Organization, the UN specialized agency for civil aviation |
| Open Skies agreement | An air services agreement removing most restrictions on routes, capacity, and pricing |
| Ownership and control | Requirements that designated airlines be owned and controlled by nationals of their country |
| RPAS | Remotely piloted aircraft system |
| SARPs | Standards and Recommended Practices adopted by ICAO |
| State aircraft | Military, customs, and police aircraft, treated separately from civil aircraft |
| Treaty on Open Skies | The 1992 treaty permitting unarmed observation flights among its parties |
